Maguires represented Mr C who was charged with benefit fraud. The victim of a stroke several years earlier, our client was claiming disability living allowance at the high rate at a time that he was video recorded undertaking a Tri-Athlon and engaging manual labour. Initially, he was accused of obtaining around £50k fraudulently. Typically the usual Tabloids, The Mail (Fit as a fiddler Benefit Cheat) The Sun, (Benefits Cheat runs out of luck) jumped on the story and were baying for blood. However, through robust negotiation, the figure of 50k was shown to be grossly exaggerated and was reduced to £17K. This, together with a powerful plea in mitigation, meant that Mr C received a much-reduced sentence and ultimately avoided Prison.
